Professional Roles & Teaching Practice II

  • Course Instructor: David Blair

  • Course Description: I took this course during my student teaching internship year, designed to help gain ground in teaching. Learning to teach is an extended process that unfolds over experience. In this course I learned to improve my teaching practice by learning about my students, establishing classroom management routines and techniques, and managing the common problems of teaching through discussion with peers offering feedback and advice. The main goal of this course is to improve as an educator by learning from the many different people and settings you come into contact with.

Reflection and Inquiry in Teaching Practice II

  • Course Instructor: Martha Beitner-Miller

  • Course Description:  I also took this course during my student teaching internship year. In this course I learned to implement scaffolding methods to help students over the barriers and to practice using embedded assessment to adjust teaching. I created an inquiry teaching investigation plan and researched the problems I anticipated students may have. I also learned how to use appropriate assessment in my lesson plan to help students solve common problems or misconceptions that may occur. I learned that thinking of the end result, or how students may learn and what problems may arise, as I plan for a lesson will allow myself to become a better educator.

Teaching for understanding with Technology

  • Course Instructors: Ron Houtman, Emily Stone

  • Course Description: This is the first course in the Educational Technology Certificate and Master’s in Educational Technology program and builds a foundation on essential topics for advanced study including theories of learning and understanding, essential mindsets for teaching with technologies, professional learning networks, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), and creative uses of technologies for learning. In this course I began to create my own professional learning network and gained a better understanding of how learners learn through The Network Learning Project, where I chose to learn something that I have always wanted to learn using only YouTube and Internet Help Forums for information. I also created a lesson plan that engages students in advanced inquiry processes and problem-based learning through the use of digital tools.

Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education

  • Course Instructor: Melissa White, Janine Campbell

  • Course Description: In this course I built upon the work I did in CEP 810, digging deeper into the TPACK theory, applying and playing with theories of learning, and continuing to grow and develop my professional networks.  In CEP 811, I learned about maker culture and the maker movement in education by repurposing the world around us. I learned how to create a mash up video, and explored new ways to remix learning experiences rooted in creativity and purposeful design practices.

Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice

  • Course Instructors: William Marsland, Andrew Steinman

  • Course Description: CEP 812 is the third and final course in the Educational Technology Certificate Program sequence. This course focuses on using a wide range of technologies to address several teaching and education-related problems. I worked with peers to examine a wicked, high-priority educational problem. With research, we collected data that informed a deeper understanding of the culture of technology integration that surrounds the problem of practice. We also explored ways to use technologies to support special learning needs. This course allowed me to reflect on ways to leverage technologies with passion and curiosity to support student learning.

Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings

  • Course Instructors: Dr. Cary Roseth, Diana Campbell, Carmen Richardson

  • Course Description: This course focuses on the understanding of how people learn, both unintentionally and intentionally and the factors involved in learning including motivation and emotions. In this course I drew on research in the psychology of learning perspectives such as what learning is and how it takes place. I further learned how these different perspectives can inform and support efforts to help others learn. In this course, I created my own Personal Theory of Learning as I synthesize what I have been learning about learning in a way that has been useful and unique to me.

Capstone in Educational Technology

  • Course Instructors: Dr. Matthew Koehler, Brittany Dillman, Aric Guant, Sarah Keenan

  • Course Description: This course is designed to show all one has accomplished throughout the Masters of Arts in Educational Technology program through a completed online portfolio. My portfolio showcases a collection of meaningful work and demonstrates success during my journey through my master’s program to share with friends, family, and future employers. I was responsible for creating a specific page for my portfolio each week until complete. Pages include but are not limited to; essays, an updated resume, an annotated transcript, and a showcase of learning. I enjoyed having the freedom to make my online portfolio unique to fit my personality and the audience I intend with my own pieces of flair.
