Philosophy of Teaching

My goal as an educator is to impart knowledge onto my students as well as have them develop a love for learning that will continue for the rest of their lives. As a teacher I carry hopes, aspirations, and goals for each individual child. My teaching philosophy focuses on four areas that I feel are most meaningful in creating a successful classroom that fosters creating productive individuals into society.

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION

I believe in using a Constructivist Approach. This methodology allows students to construct their own understanding of concepts based on prior knowledge where learning is an active process of constructing knowledge rather than acquiring it. This approach is more student-led where the teacher acts more of a facilitator. I believe in differentiating instruction for all students by incorporating a wide variety of kinesthetic, hands-on, and technology-based activities. It is important to tailor my teaching style to fit the needs and interest of the students in my classroom. I believe in engaging and authentic classroom activities that are both purposeful and beneficial to relating content to real world experiences.

THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

I believe in a Modern Learning Environment with flexibility, openness, and access to resources including technology in order to produce students ready to take on the 21st century. I believe in having a safe, welcoming, and nurturing classroom community for all students by redefining mistakes and failure. Providing an environment that supports risk-taking, invites the sharing of ideas and promotes self-discovery is essential for a successful classroom. I believe in encouraging a growth mindset that drives motivation and achievement where students believe they can increase their intelligence through effort and help from their peers, rather than a fixed mindset, where students believe they are born with all their intelligence.

STUDENT NEEDS

I believe in The Whole Child Approach where each child, in each school, in each of our communities deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. This means advancing my young students in both their academics as well as their social and emotional needs. I believe in conscious discipline, a program that integrates classroom management with social-emotional learning. Conscious disciple increases the willingness to learn by creating a sense of belonging, boosting impulse control, and helping children develop and apply sustained attention by reducing stress and encouraging contributions in a caring atmosphere. I believe in respecting children by accepting their feelings, values, and beliefs and embracing and celebrating diversities. I believe in purposeful play in an early childhood classroom, where children learn through the process of their efforts, because it is important in a child’s intellectual, social, emotional and physical development that encourages individual decision-making.

TEACHER QUALITIES

I believe in being open-minded and receptive to new ideas and styles of teaching using a Professional Learning Network. I believe in using data to drive instruction and create individualized learning. I believe in being reflective in my teaching practice each and every day, being a respectful, positive role model and leader. I believe in effective communication and collaboration with families and sharing with parents the responsibility for teaching their child, creating caring bonds and establishing individually appropriate goals for a successful schooling experience. Lastly, I believe in becoming a life-long learner, staying self-motivated and continuing to learn and use best practices.
